Medicaid provides health coverage to low-income children and provides assistance for some low-income adults, such as pregnant women, parents of dependent children, blind or disabled individuals, individuals under hospice care, individuals age 65 or older, or other medically needy criteria. In Virginia, the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) is the agency that administers Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). In Virginia we call the children's program FAMIS.
Medicaid Expansion
Medicaid Expansion provides health coverage for some low-income adults, such as single adults or parents of dependent children. Individuals between the ages of 19-64 who do not receive Medicare parts A or B, and fall under 138% of the Federal poverty level. In Virginia, the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) is the agency that administers Medicaid.
