Criminal Justice Services

The mission of the Culpeper County Criminal Justice Services (CJS) is to promote public safety and assist in the fair administration of justice through the utilization of evidence-based practices.

CJS serves the Culpeper County General District Court, the Culpeper County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, and the Culpeper County Circuit Court. CJS also receives placements from other agencies in the Commonwealth of Virginia that operate under the Comprehensive Community Corrections Act (CCCA) & Pretrial Services Act (PSA).

CJS operates both local probation and pretrial. CJS provides local probation services to misdemeanor and non-violent felony placements. CJS pretrial provides investigative and supervision services for persons charged with certain offenses awaiting trial.

The purpose of local probation is to provide the judicial system with sentencing alternatives for certain misdemeanants or persons convicted of felonies that are not felony acts of violence, as defined in § 19.2-297.1 and sentenced pursuant to § 19.2-303.3, for whom the court imposes a sentence of 12 months or less and who may require less than institutional custody in accordance with Article 9 (§9.1-173) of Chapter 1 of Title 9.1 of the Code of Virginia.

The purpose of pretrial services is to provide the judicial system with screening, investigation, assessment, and supervision of defendants pursuant to or in accordance with Article 5 (§§19.2-152.2 et seq.) of Chapter 9 of Title 19.2 of the Code of Virginia.

CJS receives funding from the County of Culpeper along with a grant administered by the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).
