FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

How can I check my existing voter registration to ensure the information is up to date?

Use the Virginia Department of Elections Citizen Portal to look up and review your current voter registration record.

What if the information on my existing voter registration is no longer accurate (e.g., you have moved, or your name has changed)?

You may submit a new voter registration application to update your voter registration record. Visit our Voter Registration page for more details.

How do I cancel my voter registration?

You can download the Request to Cancel Voter Registration form to submit to us or contact our office to have a form mailed to you. Any registered voter may cancel his registration and have his name removed from the central registration records by signing this authorization for cancelation and mailing or otherwise submitting the signed authorization to the General Registrar.

Is my party affiliation documented on my voter registration?

No. There is no voter registration-by-party in Virginia.

Where do I vote?

If you plan to vote early, you can only do so at the Voter Registration & Election Office. Our office is open for Early Voting during regular business hours, beginning 45 days prior to each election. We also offer Early Voting on the two Saturdays immediately preceding Election Day. Please visit our Early Voting page for more information.

On Election Day, all voters must go to their assigned precincts to vote. Voting does not take place at our office on Election Day. Further details about where to vote can be found on our Precincts & Polling Places page.

When is the last day to vote early?

Early Voting ends on the last Saturday before Election Day. After that date, if you plan to vote in person, you must wait until Election Day to cast a ballot at your assigned polling place.

How can I find out where my polling place is for voting on Election Day?

You can find your polling place online or give our office a call to confirm.

What hours are the polls open on Election Day?

The polls open at 6:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m. on Election Day.

Can I still vote in person if I received an absentee ballot by mail?

Yes. If you receive an absentee ballot and wish to vote in person instead, you still can. If possible, we strongly encourage you to bring your absentee ballot when you come to vote in person.

If there is no voter registration-by-party in Virginia, why does the Absentee Ballot Application ask about political parties?

There are political parties listed on the Absentee Ballot Application so that, should a voter wish to receive an absentee ballot for a primary election, our office will know which party’s ballot to mail to them.

Permanent Absentee Voters are free to change their party selection or opt out of voting in primary elections altogether. Opting out means a ballot will only be mailed for General and Special Elections. Visit our page on Absentee Voting by Mail for additional information.

I no longer wish to receive ballots automatically in the mail. How can I remove my name from the permanent absentee ballot list?

You may submit a Request to Remove Name from Permanent Absentee Voter List Form or a Permanent Absentee Voter Change Form to your local Voter Registration Office.

What is curbside voting and where is it offered?

Curbside voting is an option for individuals who are age 65 or older, or who have a disability, to vote without leaving their vehicle. An Election Officer will be sent to a curbside voter’s car to facilitate voting.

This option is available at all polling places on Election Day, as well as at our office during the 45 days of Early Voting.

Where can I find election results?

You can find election results on the Virginia Department of Elections website.

Are Election Officers the same as Poll Watchers/Observers?

No. Poll Watchers/Observers have a different set of duties and are not managed by our office. For information about becoming a Poll Watcher/Observer, please contact one of your local political parties.

Will I be paid for working as an Election Officer?

Yes. Election Officers are paid a stipend for working each election. Base pay begins at $300 for a full Election Day served. Increased stipends come with future promotions, too.
