ASAP to hold Art Show at Depot

Looking for a little art and culture between the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping next weekend? Do you want to learn about a free art program offered to high school and middle school students in Culpeper County?

Visit The Depot in historic downtown Culpeper between 2:00PM and 4:00PM on December 12th and see a wide variety of original art, crafts, music, writing samples and even food created by high school and middle school students enrolled in the After School Art Program also known as (A.S.A.P).

The popular student-centered art program holds a “professional style” art exhibition twice a year at the conclusion of each semester. Now in its seventh year, the A.S.A.P. program, sponsored by Healthy Culpeper, is a free after-school art program that offers high quality art instruction two days a week at Culpeper Middle School.

The program offers two semesters of instruction each school year in animal drawing, creative writing, guitar, food preparation, sketching and hoop dancing. In the past classes in photography, journalism, mixed media art and violin have also been offered.

On Saturday, December 12, the public is invited to share the artistic creations of A.S.A.P’s students while its guitar students provide the music.

Funding for this innovative program comes through private donations, grants, Culpeper County Parks and Recreation, Healthy Culpeper, Windmore Foundation and the generosity of parents. This year marks a critical need for founding for the program so come out a support these young artists. ASAP is also seeking donations from the public to help sustain this affordable high-quality art program.

This year's highlights include:

• Meet a Culpeper High School student who's publishing her first novel.
• Snacks provided by ASAP's cooking class
• Hoop dancing Demo
• Guitar music played by ASAP students
• A raffle for prizes
• Award winning young artists

A.S.A.P will begin its second semester of free art classes in February, 2010 (classes will be held from the end of the school day until 5:30PM) on Tuesday and Wednesday each week.

Applications can be obtained at the Healthy Culpeper web site www.healthyculpeper.org or at the Healthy Culpeper office, Culpeper Parks and Recreation office and the Culpeper County Library. Please return applications to the following address 763 Madison Road-Suite 208, Culpeper, VA 22701.

International soccer found its way to Culpeper County three weeks ago.

Here’s a geography test. Can you find the nation known as “The Gambia” on a world map? If you had a difficult time spinning your globe around, don’t worry, they found us.

While most people were grumbling about another Monday at work, a select team packed with Gambia’s top young soccer players was out having a heated practice at the Culpeper County Sports Complex.

Although Gambia is the smallest country on mainland Africa, its love of soccer or “football,” as it’s known throughout the rest of the world is immense. The team, selected from Gambia’s top young soccer players is touring the United States, practicing, playing in friendly matches and trying to gain as much playing time together as possible. While off the soccer field the team enjoys its role as cultural ambassadors for their nation.

“Culpeper is a fantastic city, these are fantastic fields and everyone has been extremely nice to us during our visit,” said Omar Ceesay, a former senior international player and current team manager for the Gambian National Select Team.

The team was a delegation brought over from the Gambia Football Association (the governing body of soccer in the country) which is the equivalent to the USSF or United States Soccer Federation here in the U.S. who operate and manage all of our national team programs from youth to the full first team that is playing in the upcoming 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The team that Eurotech Soccer Tours hosted a couple of weeks ago was a mixture of Gambian National Youth Team players from U17-U20 primarily and the purpose for the tour was the following:

To experience the culture and team travel to another country to prepare them for future trips.

To train on a daily basis and get used to different field surfaces and conditions.

To play as many competitive matches as possible.

To connect with as many professional and college entities and teams as possible. The primary focus of this was to put their players in front of as many coaches, scouts, etc. as possible in an effort to provide further opportunities for their many players.

The Gambian FA has approximately 5 teams at the national youth level and a professional league as well which is comprised of around 12 teams at the highest level all over the country. The group contacted Eurotech to operate the tour for them on the FA’s behalf and as part of our Sports Travel division, we did so. The tour started with their arrival in New York’s JFK Airport and they stayed in the Washington DC area for a period of 4-5 days playing area teams, training and sightseeing. In addition to that, they toured the MLS DC United facilities and RFK Stadium as well as watching the team train and meeting some of the players. One of the Gambian FA players had a tryout with DC United last year and has since moved on to preparations in signing a contract with a USL team here in the U.S.

The players took a momentary break from practice to take a team photo with Culpeper County Parks Supervisor Mike Skelton and Recreation Coordinator Marshall Conner.
