Kid Central Art Auction Generates Funds for Bright Spot Playground

Last December Culpeper’s Kid Central launched a Facebook-based fundraising “auction” of children’s artwork in support of the Bright Spot playground.  Six kid-created pieces of artwork generated bids on Kid Central’s Facebook page---then the top bid for each piece of art was selected on December 16th.

Each painting was influenced and modeled after a famous artist’s notable creations. Artistic styles were inspired by Warhol, Van Gogh, O’Keefe and Kandinsky.  Each piece of artwork was created exclusively and lovingly by children, to help raise funds for the Bright Spot Inclusive Playground to be constructed at the Culpeper Sports Complex.

“Our after-school children wanted to support the effort to fund this wonderful playground that will bring so much joy to the lives of area children,” said Rachel Palmer, Program Manager for Kid Central.

“Our children and staff thought this would be a nice way to give back in a creative way.”

The artwork was displayed around town for extra publicity. Throughout the month Kid Central developed a “12 Days of Giving” project as a way to give back to the community, customers and staff. Each of Kid Central’s school-based after school programs gave back to the community with their own special project, exclusive to their particular school. Kid Central’s staff volunteered in the community too, lending a hand to a wide variety of causes including toy collections, seniors, veterans, the homeless, Culpeper Human Services, the Salvation Army, rescue animals and the Annual Culpeper Men Care (Santa breakfast).

The fundraising art auction accumulated a total of $311 to benefit the Bright Spot playground.  One particular picture brought in a staggering bid of $75 dollars.

The Culpeper Parks and Recreation Department has planned a playground at the Culpeper Sports Complex for a number of years.  It wasn't until the Bright family came forward with a donation for a wheelchair accessible swing that their daughter could use, that this project gained momentum.

The desire for more accessible amenities and the community support for an accessible playground has jettisoned this project to a high priority level in a short period of time.

One family's donation and request for a wheelchair accessible swing inspired a playground where all children and caregivers can play, without limitation!

We invite you to be part of the momentum!
