The program covers real estate taxes for county landowners 65 years of age or older (prior to 1/1) and the disabled.
The home must be owned and occupied as the sole dwelling. A dwelling jointly owned by husband and wife may qualify if either spouse is 65 or over or disabled.
To qualify the household income must be less than $50,000 and net worth less that $200,000 (not including the value of the dwelling and up to 10 acres upon which it is situated). The amount of tax credit is determined by the applicant’s income and net worth. There is an annual cap of $1500 on the amount of relief that can be provided.
Household income is all income received by everyone living in the home. Relatives may live in the household, but their income must be claimed as part of the household income. Allowances are made for live-in caregivers.
Net worth amount excludes the home and 1 acre of property. Net worth includes all other real estate, automobiles, checking/savings accounts, and CD’s/ bonds/stocks/securities, etc.
Absence from the residence due to illness does not remove you from the program, provided the real estate enrolled is not used or leased by others. Examples: long-term stays in hospital, nursing homes, or convalescent homes, etc.
Participants are required to renew each year on or before April 1.
